Jérôme Houyvet

Born in 1970, Jerome was attracted to the sea from an early age and what could be more normal for a young boy living in a small Cotentin fishing village… In 1989, inspired by his love of imagery, he chose to study photography in Paris. During 3 years there he learned the various techniques required to become a fully qualified photographer. But his passion for the sea was never far away and many of his early assignments took him back to the coast and to sailing. Even before he graduated from college his work was used both on the covers and as illustrated articles in his favourite magazine: WIND.

In 1992 he jumped at an opportunity to work for the ‘Securite Civile’ covering all areas of search and rescue on land and sea as their official photographer. It was his job to document all aspects of their work and, although it often proved to be a difficult and challenging job, he learned many valuable skills.

In 1993 Jerome travelled to Hawaii where his passion for the sea and watersports turned into his career.

Since specialising in watersport photography Jerome Houyvet spends several months of the year in Hawaii to document the exploits of the best surfers and windsurfers on the planet. His principal clients are the French and international windsurfing magazines and most of the leading brands associated with the sports (Bic Sport, Neil Pryde, North Sails, Gun Sails, JP Australia, Starboard, Mistral, RRD, Red Bull, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, Oxbow…)

The rest of the year he concentrates on the marine landscape in his very own ‘corner of paradise’ – the regions of Cotentin and Normandy. After thoroughly exploring every inch of the coastline he took on the challenging task of photographing the Normandy coastline from the air with the help of his powered paraglider. For the last 5 years he has captured incredible images from the bay of Mont Saint Michel to "le Treport".

In 2003 Jerome received the prestigious award of ‘Young Talent’ at the Festival International de Photographie de Mer in Vannes, France.

In 2007 Jerome opened his own gallery ‘Lumieres Marines’ on the quayside in Barfleur where he currently exhibits and sells his work.
